Time Warner Cable Launches Interactive Baseball Feature
NEW YORK (Dow Jones)--Time Warner Cable is introducing a a new interactive TV feature catering to fantasy baseball fans in four markets.
The new feature lets users watch any program and get updated stats about their fantasy team on TV. The new feature has already been tested in Green Bay, Wis. It’s also coming out in Austin, Texas; San Antonio; and Columbia, S.C. in the initial launch.
With Time Warner’s "Fantasy Baseball Tracker," users can check game scores, leaderboards, roster updates and player news on a 3/4 screen by pressing a button on the remote. The feature can also produce a single ticker with personalized player stats and scoring alerts as well as full-screen scoreboards with more detailed information.
"Our technology lets fans check on all their specific fantasy baseball team players without having to run to their computers in the middle of a game," Tim Peters, the chief of BIAP Systems, said in a statement. BIAP Systems is a Plano, Texas, company that’s providing the technology.
In efforts to differentiate from TV services offered by satellite and telephone carriers, cable companies have been rushing to offer more interactive features. Time Warner Cable, a unit of Time Warner Inc. (TWX), collaborated with BIAP last year to create interactive features for fantasy football as well for the winter Olympic Games. The two also worked together to come up with an interactive application that lets viewers track their eBay auctions while watching TV.
Shares of Time Warner traded recently at $17.22, down 39 cents, or 2.2%.
